The Johannes Kepler University is the region's largest research institution, in both basic and applied research. One fifth of the university's budget comes from subsidies and third-party funds. In cooperation with the companies TMG (Technologie-Marketing GmbH Oberösterreich) and UAR (Upper Austrian Research GmbH) 'centers of competence' are being constructed within the framework of the Austrian government's 'Kplus' and 'K'ind' programs.
Two of the most important centers are the 'Software Competence Center Hagenberg' (SCCH) and the 'Linz Center of Competence in Mechatronics' (LCM).
