Areas of Study

Most of the areas of study in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business are grouped into two 'Studienabschnitte' (parts of study). In the first part of study the relevant bases or foundations are laid, while in the second phase the focus is on deepening and specializing knowledge. On completing their study, students graduate as 'Magister/Magistra der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften' (with a Master's degree in Social Sciences, Economics and Business).
After this first degree, further study at doctorate level opens up access to professional positions which require a particularly high level of academic qualification, for example in the areas of university or other research and teaching. The final award for this study is the 'Doktorat der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften' (Doctorate of Social Sciences, Economics and Business).

  • Economics and Business Administration (Wirtschaftswissenschaften): This area of study offers a comprehensive business education with the opportunity to specialize in certain subjects: business administration, international business administration, economics and e-business management.
  • Business Informatics (Wirtschaftsinformatik): This subject combines elements of business administration and information technology. The objects of study are business and administrative information and communication systems.
  • Business and Education (Wirtschaftspädagogik): This subject combines elements of economics and business administration with teacher training. The education provides access to a professional career both in business and in teaching.
  • Social Economics (Sozialwirtschaft): The program leads to the recognition, evaluation and the active scientific configuration of social phenomena and processes. The focus is on interdisciplinarity, international orientation and relationship to practice.
  • Sociology (Soziologie): The program deals with the description and explanation of social processes. In addition, the acquisition of techniques of sociological analysis facilitates an academic contribution to the shaping of social developments.
  • Statistics (Statistik): This subject has a mathematical focus and also incorporates the basics of economics, politics, law and sociology. The University of Linz offers a 6-semester 'Bakkalaureat' (Bachelor's degree); the 'Magister' (Master's) requires a further 2 semesters.
  • Doctorate study (Doktoratsstudium): The aim of study is to contribute to the development of the disciplines of Social Sciences, Economics and Business through independent research. Research students will be expected to work closely with academic staff and to regularly present and discuss their thesis research.
