Faculty of Law

  • 16 Departments
  • More than 100academic staff
  • More than 3 700 graduates since the creation of the faculty.

The study of Law at the University of Linz offers a basic education in a wide variety of subjects as well as a range of special subjects. In the second part of study, in depth knowledge acquired through specialization in the most varied areas of law offers the opportunity to gain understanding of interdisciplinary tasks. The research work of the university is based on practice and is continuously being adapted to suit current societal and socio-political trends. Thus the highly relevant subject areas of commercial, private, women's and environmental law complement the research interests of the classical law disciplines.

However, the varied academic activities not only cover national fields, but also take increasing internationalization into consideration, for example through the emphasis on EU Law and the establishment of 'Legal English' as a compulsory subject. Through a multinational exchange of teachers and students with other universities, competencies in the solving of legal issues are given an international dimension.

The degree finishes with the academic title Magister/Magistra of Law (Mag.iur). The second part is completed through particular specialized fields. The students first follow an obligatory basic study and then specialize in their areas of interest. The doctorate study entitles students to use the academic title Doctor of Law. As further education for graduates and postgraduates, the university offers a course on European Law (2 semesters) and a Master‘s program in European Law (4 semesters). Graduates of Law, Social Sciences, Economics and Business can complete a two semester course leading to the title of "Europarechtsexperte/in" (Expert in European Law) and a further two semesters of Master's study granting the title of M.A.S. (Master of Advanced Studies, European Law) respectively from 2003 the title LL.M (Master of Laws). The courses provide the knowledge which is essential for the challenge of European integration and constitute an ideal additional qualification for all who aspire to pursue a career outside Austria.
