The ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) was developed by the European Commission as a means of facilitating academic recognition and the transfer of credits from one university institution to another using a common basis of measurement.
According to ECTS, 60 credits represent the full workload of an academic year of study, and normally 30 credits for a semester and 20 credits for one term.
In Austrian higher education, course units are traditionally measured in semester hours per week. The allocation of ECTS credits at JKU was determined in the single curricula. The number of ECTS credits for each course is indicated in the online course catalogue of Johannes Kepler University Linz. Students receive ECTS credits upon successful completion of a course. Credits are transferred from one university to another on the basis of a prior learning agreement between the student and the universities involved.
Course information (course content, prerequisites, assessment etc.) is available in the online course catalogue. After the students study period at JKU, the student will receive a transcript of records which specifies the students academic achievements according to the Austrian and ECTS scheme and thus enables a transfer of course credit to another university.
