Study Program

The curriculum consists of introductory tutorials, courses in General Business Administration, two Areas of Specialization (Majors) in Business Administration, Economics and German as a Foreign Language.

A course consists of 2 academic hours (equals two times 45 minutes) for the duration of one semester. Classes are held once a week. For the MAS Program, the curriculum totals 70 academic hours.

Required Courses MAS (International Management)

INTRODUCTION TO RELEVANT ISSUES CONCERNING SOCIETY, ECONOMY, AND UNIVERSITY (8 hours)

The courses in this area are offered in the form of various mandatory courses (for example, the Cultural Sensitivity Training and the German Intensive Language Course in September as well as attending regular MAS-meetings) which comprise the Austrian university system, culture and society, political and economic conditions of the Austrian and the European economic systems, as well as business practices in Austria and Europe.

Special emphasis is given to German as a foreign language. If students are already fluent, an examination can be taken prior to the beginning of a course. Upon passing this exam, the results will count as successful completion of the course. Students whose mother tongue is German must substitute the required courses "German as a Foreign Language" with one of the three languages: English, French, or Spanish.

GENERAL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (6 hours)

Courses offered in this area apply to business administration practices in German-speaking countries and integrate various aspects of management. The closest comparable courses in North America are "Policy" or "Strategy".

TWO AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (2x8 hours = 16 hours)

Due to the recent change of curriculum for business majors at JKU, 8 hours per week in the areas of specialization must be successfully completed.

Courses are offered in the following areas:

  • Managerial Finance
  • Business Taxation
  • Environmental Management
  • Public Sector & Nonprofit Management
  • Production and Logistics Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Marketing
  • International Marketing
  • Organisational Behaviour/Design
  • Strategic Management
  • Start up business and Entrepreneurship
  • Accounting & Auditing
  • Management Information Systems (Business Informatics)

Further information on courses in Business Administration can be found on wiwi.jku.at

ECONOMIC THEORY or ECONOMIC POLICY (2 hours)

GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (18 hours)

For all subjects except German as a Foreign Language, examinations have a cumulative format, meaning the grades of the final examination are comprised of the grades earned in the single courses. The student must earn one of the following grades: very good (1), good (2), satisfactory (3), or pass (4).
If a course is failed by earning a (5), the course must be repeated and can only be repeated twice.

German as a Foreign Language has the format of a comprehensive final examination. Successful completion of all the required language courses is a prerequisite for the final exam.

MASTER THESIS

The required Master thesis that has to be submitted in German allows students to prove their capability of working independently on a special subject in a scientific manner. The topic of this thesis should be related to a field of Business Administration and incorporate and emphasize the international character of the MAS Program. The candidate can either propose the thesis topic of his or her choice, request guidance from faculty members, or select the thesis topic from among those proposed by a faculty member.

Students working on the thesis are required to attend a research seminar. The completion of the Master thesis is counted as the equivalent of 20 course hours.
