Students from the EU will just need their European Health Insurance Card.
Students from other countries with a national insurance agreement with Austria (e.g. Turkey) have to inform themselves at their national insurance company and get an appropriate document for their stay in Austria.
In case of an illness you have to show this document or your insurance card to the doctor. Then you have to fill out a document called “Patientenerklärung”, which is just to get all the information about you and to secure all legal formalitys. This document then allows you to seek free medical services.
For students from countries with no national insurance agreement with Austria:
If you are from a country which has no national insurance agreement with Austria you are highly recommended to obtain medical insurance with the Upper Austrian health insurance company (OÖGKK) for a fee of € 23.26 per month. This insurance will also be accepted for your visa application. Registration can only be made after arrival. The forms are available at the International Office.
The insurance covers:
Hospital stays, medical attention and service free of charge (with the "E-Card" provided by the OÖGKK), reduced prescription charges of € 4.80 each.
To register for insurance with OÖGKK you need the following:
- Registration form
- Confirmation of registration at the University ("Studienbestätigung")
- "Studienblatt" which you can print at the ServicePoint Computers at the University
- Residence Registration ("Meldezettel")
