Tuition Fees

How much is the tuition fee?

Degree programme students and non-degree programme students who are citizens of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain or the UK have to pay tuition fees of € 363,36 per semester.

For non-degree programme students who are citizens of a country not mentioned in the first paragraph or who have no citizenship at all, the tuition fee is € 726,72 per semester. Degree programme students from a country not mentioned above have to pay tuition fees of € 363,36 per semester.

Regular degree programme students from the following countries are exempted from paying the tuition fee and only have to pay the Student Union fee:
Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoren, Congo (Democratic Repubik of), Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kiribati, Laos (People’s Republic of), Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Samoa, Sao-Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania (United Republic of), Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia.

On the basis of respective cooperation agreements, the tuition fee is also waived for students of certain universities, provided they have been selected by their home university to study at JKU (for further information please contact your home university).

If the tuition fee is paid during the additional enrolment period (by 30 November in the winter semester, and by 30 April in the summer semester), which immediately follows the general admission period, the tuition fee increases by 10 %, to € 399,10 or 799,39 respectively.

Each student is also required to pay the Student Union fee (ÖH Beitrag) which presently amounts to € 15,86 per semester.

!!! Important!!!

The university admission expires if the student union fee (and the tuition fee, if applicable) is not paid.

Who does not have to pay tuition fees?

On application to the rector, the tuition fee is waived for the following students:

  • Students studying at Austrian universities who attend studies or periods of practical training under transnational, EU, national, or university, mobility programmes abroad
  • Students from foreign universities who attend studies or periods of practical training under transnational, EU, national, or university mobility programmes at Austrian universities
  • Convention refugees
  • Holders of a Opferausweis (victims card) or an official certificate according to § 10 of the Opferfürsorgegesetz (Victims Welfare Act)
  • Students, who have to study abroad in case of a binding provision in the curriculum

The application for exemption from payment of the tuition fee has to be submitted at the end of the additional period of the respective semester (by 30 November in the winter semester, and by 30 April in the summer semester).
It has to include the respective supporting documents (certification concerning participation in a mobility programme, proof of refugee status, Opferausweis (victims card) etc.)
